Multiple-byte units

The term byte originated in 1956, coined by Werner Buchholz during the development of the IBM 7030 Stretch computer. It initially referred to variable-length sequences of bits, but by the 1960s, it standardized to 8 bits. The word “byte” was derived to avoid confusion with bit.
